Kiwanis Camp Schonwald Memorial Park

In 1952 the Highline Kiwanis Club, for the purpose of providing a site for youth camping experiences, acquired Kiwanis Camp Schonwald’s ten-acre camping area.  The site was formally dedicated to this cause on September 25, 1954 and re-dedicated on May 16, 1978 (click here for re-dedication speech which also includes a history of early camp development).

The club’s goal to provide a wilderness within a city for the youth of our community has been maintained for the past 60 years and has been done at no cost for the use of the site during this entire period of time. The site welcomes over 5,000 visitors each year including Boy and Girl Scouts, Camp Fire youth, school groups, church groups and other youth groups for day camps and overnight camping.

The camp’s facilities include:  a large outdoor teepee with a large fireplace capable of holding approximately 80 to 100 people, a lodge which includes kitchen facilities and restrooms and can be used for indoor activities as well as sleeping quarters, two Adirondack’s for outdoor camping and an amphitheater consisting of permanent seating and a demonstration stage.

Beside the shelter, restrooms, and kitchen facilities, there are ten acres of forest that hold something for everyone.  The woods are filled with meandering nature trails and are bisected by a churning creek.  Camping, hiking and exploring nature are just three of the things to do while at Kiwanis Schonwald Memorial Park.
